Migration and Refugees

Background

Irregular migration, displacement, and the need for host countries to adapt their refugee response and relief efforts poses a stark challenge to governments and NGOs across the globe.

Delta Strategies supports governments and NGOs in designing, and implementing, target refugee relief and response projects. We adopt a participatory, empathetic approach to all our work in this area.

In 2022, we worked with the UN International Organisation for Migration to develop and refine the Egypt component of their international 'Waka Well' programme, seeking to identify and promote pathways for safe and legal migration for young Egyptians.

We have also advised organisations including NAMA, based in the UAE, on designing and rolling out refugee response projects, including proposals for a major livelihood-generation project for wmen in Jerash refugee camp, in Jordan.

We supported major research consultancies in this sector, including a major study into child labour and exploitation at Za'atari Refugee Camp, on the Jordan-Syria border, looking at the nuanced push-and-pull factors which underpin child refugee labour, and providing recommendations for mitigating the risks.

Case Study

The Challenge

  • The Waka Well programme was developed to encourage and provide information and referral pathways for safe and legal migration for youth to popular destination countries.

  • The programme, developed by the IOM Awareness Raising Unit is already active in ten African countries.

  • The IOM sought a consulting team to support them in developing the Egypt component of the Waka Well platform

The Outcome

Through extensive desk review, engagement with diplomatic missions and embassies in Egypt, as well as visa agencies, Delta Strategies was able to produce multi-lingual content for the Waka Well platform, setting out how young Egyptians can safely and legally access employment and education opportunities abroad.
